Cava Misericordia
It is a valley full of water and greenery, with striking landscapes. Along the way, among the paths, you will come across an ancient hermitage, the Hermitage of Santa Maria della Misericordia. The remains of ancient mills testify to the laborious work of man in the past. In the warm season you can cool off in the Ciaramite stream.
What you need:
Hiking shoes, day pack, comfortable layered clothing suitable for the climate, weather-proof and windproof jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, lunch box, water (min. 1.5 liters).
Recommended: trekking poles, binoculars, flashlight.
Cava Ispica
A wild and full of greenery valley will lead you to discover ancient historical sites, prehistoric graves, a rock castle from the Arab-Norman era, and a large number of rock dwellings carved into the rock. During the walk, you will learn about the many stories and legends of the past: the Sorceress Saraghina, the Cieconato who was born blind from Spaccaforno. And if you are really lucky, you may even encounter unicorns.
What you need:
Hiking shoes, day pack, comfortable layered clothing suitable for the climate, weather-proof and windproof jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, lunch box, water (min. 1.5 liters).
Recommended: trekking poles, binoculars, flashlight.
Costa di Carro
This natural reserve lies along the most stunning stretch of the Iblean coast. The trail is an easy hike that winds through Mediterranean vegetation along a coastal path atop the cliffs. You walk among agaves and dwarf palms, starting from Cava d’Aliga to Sampieri, eventually reaching the ruins of the ancient brick factory at Penna in Punta Pisciotto. During the warmer months, you can take a break for a swim in the sandy bay known as “La Spiaggetta.”
What you need:
Hiking shoes, day pack, comfortable layered clothing suitable for the climate, weather-proof and windproof jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, lunch box, water (min. 1.5 liters).
Recommended: trekking poles, binoculars, flashlight, swimsuit, towel.
Ragusa up&down
An unusual route, up and down forgotten paths, to rediscover hidden corners and landscapes from the three hills surrounding the town center: San Matteo Hill, Rosario Hill, and Croce Hill. Walking through narrow streets, paths, and staircases, you’ll uncover the city’s stories, festivals, and traditions. Along the way, you can combine a visit to the Convento della Croce and/or the city’s museums (Ancient Pharmacy, Palazzo Spadaro, Commissariato di Vigata) and take a sweet break to taste the typical “teste di turco” pastries.
What you need:
Hiking shoes, day pack, comfortable layered clothing suitable for the climate, weather-proof and windproof jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, lunch box, water (min. 1.5 liters).
Recommended: trekking poles, binoculars, flashlight.
Modica up&down
A secluded route, up and down alleys, stairs, and hidden paths, to rediscover corners and glimpses from the hills surrounding the town: Pizzo, Idria, Giganta, Monserrato. From above, Modica appears just like a split pomegranate – where the two streams, Pozzo dei Pruni and Janni Mauro, now dry and covered, join, transformed into the current Corso Umberto I. Along the way, you can make some sweet stop to taste the typical Modica chocolate or the various traditional biscuits and sweets.
What you need:
Hiking shoes, day pack, comfortable layered clothing suitable for the climate, weather-proof and windproof jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, lunch box, water (min. 1.5 liters).
Recommended: trekking poles, binoculars, flashlight.

Riserva naturale di Pantalica
The Pantalica Nature Reserve is located on the Anapo Valley, the most striking quarry in the Monti Iblei, declared a UNESCO heritage site for its historical, archaeological, and landscape values. Here, water has carved a wonderful valley where humans have lived since the prehistoric era. Walking through the reserve, there are various archaeological sites and the old railroad track of “Ciccio Pecora.” In the warm season, it is possible to take a refreshing swim along the Anapo River or in the Calcinara stream.
What you need:
Hiking shoes, day pack, comfortable layered clothing suitable for the climate, weather-proof and windproof jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, lunch box, water (min. 1.5 liters).
Recommended: trekking poles, binoculars, flashlight, swimsuit, towel.
Riserva naturale di Vendicari
Vendicari is a natural oasis immersed in Mediterranean vegetation, home to over 200 bird species, including flamingos, herons, and egrets. It’s also a nesting site for the Caretta caretta turtle. Along the path, you can explore the rich history of this area: from the Hellenistic-era quarries and the Byzantine Cuba, to the 15th-century Torre Sveva and the ancient tuna fishery, which operated until 1943. During the warmer months, you can take a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters of the golden sandy coves.
What you need:
Hiking shoes, day pack, comfortable layered clothing suitable for the climate, weather-proof and windproof jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, lunch box, water (min. 1.5 liters).
Recommended: trekking poles, binoculars, flashlight, swimsuit, towel.
Entrance to the Reserve with ticket
Cava Carosello
Monte Alveria is a heart-shaped highland where the ancient city of Netum once stood. From here, you descend along ancient mule tracks into the valley where the Asinaro River flows, surrounded by wild nature. The path through the gorge follows old trails, passing by mills and tanneries from the Arab era, leading to a beautiful natural pond where you can cool off or take a refreshing dip.
What you need:
Hiking shoes, day pack, comfortable layered clothing suitable for the climate, weather-proof and windproof jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, lunch box, water (min. 1.5 liters).
Recommended: trekking poles, binoculars, flashlight.
Riserva Cava Grande del Cassibile
The Cava Grande Reserve is a stunning valley where the Cassibile River flows, carving deep gorges over millennia and creating waterfalls and pools. Currently, the only accessible and walkable trail is the Carrubella loop, which leads to a wonderful “urvu,” a crystal-clear natural pond where, in the warmer months, you can enjoy a revitalizing swim.
What you need:
Hiking shoes, day pack, comfortable layered clothing suitable for the climate, weather-proof and windproof jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, lunch box, water (min. 1.5 liters).

From the historic center you can easily reach the valleys surrounding the city, Cava Santa Domenica, with a path under the 3 bridges of Ragusa Superiore, and Cava San Leonardo, a valley under Ragusa Ibla with ancient mills and an old cotton factory. Yoga trek & joy
Excursions to stunning places to rediscover a deep connection with nature through yoga. Along the way, you take breaks to practice simple asanas (yoga poses), pranayama (breathing techniques), and short meditations from the Kundalini tradition. The excursions and yoga practice are accessible to everyone, whether you have previous experience with hiking or yoga, or if you are a beginner looking for a new physical practice in connection with nature.
What you need:
hiking shoes, backpack, comfortable clothing that allows for movement, windproof/rainproof jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, snack, water (min 1.5 liters). Recommended: a mat, a towel, or a cushion to sit on.
Forest bathing
The woods of the Monti Iblei offer fabulous and dream-like atmospheres, ideal for a revitalizing walk, especially when combined with a forest bathing practice. From the Giarranauti forest with holm oak and downy oak to the Contessa wood, overlooking the Anapo Valley; from the Bosco Pisano, home to the extremely rare Zelkova Sicula, to the Bosco di Canalazzo, with several panoramic views; to the Baulì forest, a holm oak forest famous for its Arabian-era dwellings. Moving inland, you can also find the Niscemi cork oak forest and the Santo Pietro forest, with majestic trees, included in the register of monumental trees.
What you need:
hiking shoes, backpack, comfortable clothing that allows for movement, windproof/rainproof jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, snack, water (min 1.5 liters). Recommended: a mat, a towel, or a cushion to sit on.
Fototrekking
Thanks to my knowledge of the area and my experience as a guide for the artistic residencies of the Zipelli Foundation for the Ragusa Foto Festival (Mario Cresci in 2024, Francesca Todde in 2025), I can guide individuals and small groups on a tailor-made route to discover and photograph the beauty of the Monti Iblei landscape: a unique and authentic experience to discover hidden spots, capture unusual images, and create precious memories.
What you need:
hiking shoes, backpack, comfortable and layered clothing suitable for the season, windproof-rain jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, water (min 1 lt), photographic equipment.
Family roots
Roots tourism is a journey through time, for second- and third-generation emigrants searching for their family origins in Sicily and particularly in the Iblei. Through my network of contacts and acquaintances, I offer support and advice to foreign tourists to visit the places of the ancestors, reconnect with distant relatives, reconstruct lost memories, and rediscover forgotten flavors. An intense experience, of great connection and strong emotional charge, in search of lost identity.
What you need:
Comfortable shoes.
Notice: Please contact me a few weeks in advance, to start the research and plan the itinerary. Please send any information or photo or document useful for tracing people and places.
Carob exp
An experience dedicated to the most majestic tree of the Iblean highland, to rediscover the customs and traditions related to carob, our black gold, a fruit once considered poor food, now a precious raw material for countless food preparations. We meet at an ancient farmhouse where we will take a short walk to admire the majestic trees of the Iblean countryside and discover stories and curiosities related to the carob tree. Then we proceed to the veranda to taste some dishes made from carob. During the harvest season (August and September), it is also possible to experience the “cutuliata e cugghiuta” (shaking and collecting the carobs), filling a basket with precious fruits to take home.
What you need:
hiking shoes, backpack, comfortable clothing that allows for movement, windproof/rainproof jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, snack, water (min 1.5 liters). Recommended: a bag for collecting carobs.
Aperitrek ®
A trek with an aperitif in the marvelous Cava Ispica, among rock dwellings and wild nature. During the stop at Rifugio Scirocco (the southernmost refuge in Italy), we have lunch with km zero products typical of the Iblean Mountains (scacce, pane cunzato, sfincione, cheese, cured meats) accompanied by excellent local wine, in the presence of sommelier Giovanni Carbone. A unique experience in a place where time seems to have stood still. (*) In summer, an aperitrek in the late afternoon or evening is possible and preferable, with a stop at Rifugio Scirocco for dinner.
What you need:
hiking shoes, backpack, comfortable and layered clothing appropriate for the season, windproof/rainproof jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, water (min 1.5 liters). Recommended: a personal plate and glass.
Cooking class
A walk in the Baroque center of Scicli, the city of Commissario Montalbano, to discover the shops where you can buy local food and wine. Then you stop at Emilia’s, in the historic family home, to prepare fresh pasta together using ancient local grains. Finally, you have lunch in the characteristic kitchen of the dammuso, in a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere, to savor the history and culture of Sicily through food, wine, and conversation.
What you need:
comfortable shoes, shopping bag.
Watermill exp
A walk through history and nature in the valleys near Ragusa, discovering quarries, rivers, lime kilns, and ancient mills. Then you stop at Mulino La Timpa to see the ancient stone mill in operation and learn about ancient Sicilian grains. Finally, a tasting menu with artisanal products prepared with mill flours: warm bread, pizza in a pan, Ragusan focaccia, accompanied by a glass of Sicilian wine and a handmade dessert.
What you need
hiking shoes, backpack, comfortable and layered clothing appropriate for the season, windproof/rainproof jacket, sunglasses, sunscreen, water (min 1 liter).
Choco exp
A walk in the Baroque center of Modica, the city of chocolate, to discover the places linked to this magical and divine food. Then you stop at Gioietta’s, where Elisa explains how to prepare chocolate bars, using the family’s ancient molds, the typical “latte.” Each participant will be able to create their own chocolate bar and personalize it to their taste. You conclude with a tasting of traditional Modica sweets, accompanied by a fine dessert wine.
What you need:
comfortable shoes, bag for the bars.

Mulino exp
Experience on Monti Iblei.
Experience in the Hyblean Mountains: practicing yoga in the wild, learning about the local traditions, and joining trekking followed by an aperitif with local products.
“The Spadola in the Rock”.
I am Raffaella Spadola, known as “The Spadola in the Rock,” because of my passion for walking around “petri petri.” An accountant repentant, I have been walking everywhere in the Monti Iblei and throughout Sicily since 2005. Since 2021 I have been an associated Aigae Environmental Hiking Guide (SI597) and I organize hikes in the Monti Iblei. Walking is for me a way to discover the Sicilian territory through a slow, deep and meditative approach. I am a yoga teacher and enjoy practicing it in nature. I live in Marina di Ragusa and whenever I can I go and listen to the sound of the sea. When I’m not walking or standing by the sea, I retreat to the cinema – or the sofa – to watch movies.
“Petri Petri” is the name I have chosen for my hikes and experiences in the Iblean Mountains. The name Petri Petri comes from a Sicilian expression meaning getting lost among the stones: walking to immerse oneself in nature, experiencing a bit of adventure and a great sense of freedom.
